What is stainless steel?

Stainless steel is an alloy contains 18% chromium, 8 % nickel and remaining iron content .

Chromium and nickel will form a hard and chemical resistant oxide layer, protecting the underlaying material.

What is the difference between stainless steel and mild steel.

1.Mild steel can corrode while stainless offers high amount of resistance to corossion.

2.Mild steel offers high malleability property where as stainless steel offers less malleability properties.

3.Mild steel is less durable. and durability time of stainless steel is high.

4.Mild steel is more ductile and stainless steel is ductile.

these are the major differences between mild steel and stainless steel.

What are the different types of stainless steel?

Austenitic steel.

The austenitic group comprises the most common types of stainless steel.

Austenite present in stainless steel that is why it is called as austenitic steel. This type of stainless steel contains rich amount chromium and nickel and molybdenum. This offers excellent strength and malleability.

Ferritic stainless steel.

In this type of stainless steel contains between 10.5% and 30% chromium. ferritic stainless steels usually contains less aount of carbon percentage low carbon content which is not more than 0.1%.

Duplex Stainless steel.

Duplex stainless steel has property of both the austenitic and ferritic, which resulting a metal that is stronger than both. This higher strength can lead to considerable weight reductions. Its excellent resistance to corrosion, even in demanding environment, make it perfect for use in marine

applications.

Martensitic Stainless steel.

Structurally similar to ferritic stainless steel but martensitic stainless has more carbon percentage (up to 1.2%), martensitic stainless steel can be hardened to a large degree.

Martensitic stainless steel mainly used in making of medical tools and surgical equipment's.
